Chapter 6: Pain in Paradise
"All I'm saying is, if your man ain't around half the time, it means he's probably fooling around with some other woman, am-I-right?" Declared Tracey Steinberg, oblivious to the meaningful glances and frantic gestures being thrown her way.
To her credit, Marian continued strumming along as if she hadn't heard anything. When she put down her guitar, she turned around and smiled brightly at them. "Cookies, ladies?" She asked, and Colette and Teresa nodded mutely while Tracey replied, "Sure!" in her loud and boisterous way.
When Marian left the room, the two women turned their eyes on Tracy. "Tracy! How could you say something like that!" Scolded Teresa.
"What?" Tracy asked, blinking.
"Marian and Dakota are going through a major rough patch! He hasn't been around, and he's been late a lot, so they've been fighting..."
Tracy wiggled her lips and then shrugged, "I'm just telling it like it is, girlfriend!" Teresa looked down her nose at Tracey while Colette just seemed taken aback.
Marian entered with a plate of cookies and passed them to Tracy first. Tracy seemed positively delighted, to say the least.
Colette looked sidelong at Tracy before smiling up at Marian, "You been keeping busy girl?"
Marian smiled, "Sure, but not as much as you! Tell me, how did it go with the caterer?"
"Ugh, that cake was gross! I hate having a gluten allergy!"
Tracy shrugged and have her a side-long smile, "You could just have Dakota give out lots of drinks before the cake! Then, no one would care!"
Colette and Teresa's eyes snapped to Marian to gauge her reaction at hearing her boyfriend's name. Luckily, she was laughing. "My goodness, Tracy!"
"Oh!" Marian perked up, "I found some really cool tricks while I was making these cookies. Maybe I could try to figure something out for your wedding cake?"
"No way! These are gluten free?" Tracy said.
Colette eagerly reached for the platter and bit into one of the cookies. Her eyes lit up, "Woah...." She looked at Marian brightly, "You're hired!"
---
Tracy jogged over to the group. "Hey guys! I was just with Marian, Teresa, and Colette, and woah, you should've felt the frost machine!" Kellan Dishman, one of Dakota's best friends, looked a bit perturbed when Tracy showed up. "They're majorly angry at you, man. What, you fooling around with Stella or something?"
Dakota looked taken aback, "What? Me? Of course not!" Stella was one of his other good friends, aside from Tracy and Kellan.
Dakota looked down, a bit embarrassed, "I've just been busy, ok? Now are we going to work out or what?"
"You should really try to work things out with her, man," Said Kellan. "She seems really upset."
"I know," Dakota sighed, frustrated, "I tried telling her that what I was doing was all for her, and our future, but she won't listen!"
Kellan looked side-long at Dakota, "Have you been working too hard again man?"
Dakota sighed, "Ugh, I don't know. Maybe?"
Kellan rolled his eyes, "Do you believe this guy? When we were in high school, there was this girl he really digged, Emily. He went over to her house, fixed all her broken stuff, cleaned up, upgraded her computer, made he dinner, for pete's sake. That girl walked all over him man."
"What? Whipped," Replied Tracy.
"What he doesn't get is," Kellan said, clunking Dakota on the back of the head, "Girls need some loving. Some romance! Otherwise, you're just a woo-hooing simbot!"
"Ooh, get me one-a those," Tracy purred.
"I'm trying to prepare for our future, ok?" Dakota looked down and scratched the back of his head, embarrassed, "I know I want to marry her, but I want to be able to take care of her."
"You're supposed to be taking care of her now, too, dude, and she needs more than money and a clean, working sink," Replied Kellan sympathetically.
Dakota sighed, "Maybe you're right."
